Wai Ting & John Pollock kick off their look back at the greatest combat sports film franchise of all time with a review of Rocky (1976), written by and starring Sylvester Stallone.
They discuss the circumstances that led to the then-unknown Stallone writing and starring in the film, the debated influence of Chuck Wepner vs. Muhammad Ali on the film’s story, the performances of its supporting cast featuring Talia Shire, Burt Young, Carl Weathers and Burgess Meredith, the creative ways in which the film dealt with considerable budget limitations, the film’s incredible box office and Academy Awards successes, the classic Bill Conti score, and how unfavourably several of the film’s scenes have aged through a modern lens.
Synopsis from Google:
Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone), a small-time boxer from working-class Philadelphia, is arbitrarily chosen to take on the reigning world heavyweight champion, Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers), when the undefeated fighter's scheduled opponent is injured. While training with feisty former bantamweight contender Mickey Goldmill (Burgess Meredith), Rocky tentatively begins a relationship with Adrian (Talia Shire), the wallflower sister of his meat-packer pal Paulie (Burt Young).
