Much of the world breathed a collective sigh of relief yesterday when President Trump said he would

not use force to take control of Greenland. The president also told world leaders he would not impose

tariffs on European countries, as he had previously

said he would if they didn't let the U.S. take over. So what changed his mind? Well, Trump says he had

a productive meeting with NATO Secretary General, and that the two of them formed the framework

of a future deal. The NATO spokesperson went into more detail, saying the framework focuses on

securing the Arctic, not by a takeover, but

through the efforts of several allies. There are also some reports that give more specifics,

saying Denmark could give the U.S. ownership over just small pockets of Greenland, so the U.S.

could build military bases. But again, nothing is set in stone just yet. Before announcing the

framework, President Trump had

been facing a lot of backlash over his earlier threats. Hours before his announcement,

the European Union's parliament stopped final approval of a critical trade deal Trump reached

with the block last summer, though that's when Trump was saying, during his speech at the

World Economic Forum, that he would settle for nothing less than ownership of Greenland.
