Pope Leo the 14th has attended his first mass as the head of the Catholic Church, with cardinals at the Sistine Chapel this morning. People around the world have been celebrating

the appointment of the 69-year-old from Chicago, who's known as a leader with global experience.

Many people are hoping he'll continue the work of his predecessor, Pope Francis, on reforming the

church, as well as his focus on poverty and marginalized people.

CNN's Ben Wiederman has more.

Yes, Joe, the announcement that Cardinal Robert Prevost from Chicago was chosen as the Roman

Catholic's 267th Pope was a shock because he wasn't considered one of the top candidates,

but also because he's an American, the first

ever to become Pope. Pope Leo now has to chart the course he plans to take as the spiritual

leader of the world's 1.4 billion Catholics. In his address Thursday to the faithful, he stressed

the need to build bridges, and that's a tall order in a time of conflict

and division. Vice President J.D. Vance says the U.S. will stay out of the India-Pakistan conflict.

What we can do is try to encourage these folks to de-escalate a little bit, but we're not

going to get involved in the middle of war that's fundamentally none of our business.

Vance was speaking to Fox News about this week's fighting between the longtime rivals,

as tensions continue to flare. India and Pakistan have accused each other of launching attacks
