Summary

Pope Francis has reposed, and the Church now turns to his legacy. In this second part of our tribute, Steve is once again joined by Greg Gassman of the Popeular History Podcast (popeularhistory.com) to unpack the full arc of Pope Francis’ time on the throne of St. Peter. From early humility in the Casa Santa Marta to bold global moves on war, synodality, and women in church leadership, we analyze a pontificate defined by contradiction, compassion, and courage. How did Francis challenge the office of pope while redefining what it means to be the Bishop of Rome? And how did his decisions set the stage for the 2025 Conclave?

Hey, welcome back, everybody. I am with Greg Gassman again of the Popular History Podcast. In the last episode, you heard, we talked about a setup of Pope Francis's papacy. We talked about the early Pope Francis, the Cardinal Burgolio, and all of his storied career up to the point right before he was elected. And now we're going to

1:42.4

transfer into the actual papacy of Pope Francis. Now,

1:48.7

as of this recording in early May of 2025, sadly, the Pope has reposed or passed on. When we

1:59.2

recorded the first episode, he had not died yet. So we're recording about three weeks

2:06.3

later for the second episode. So I would definitely highly suggest listening to that first episode.

Now we'll listen to the second episode and then just basically open the floodgates for her pop casting from this

point forward as we move through the funeral, which I know Greg has covered.

And maybe we can talk a little bit about his thoughts and from the actual funeral.

And then we'll move on into future episodes into the conclave
