Summary

When it comes to money and personal finance, I like to think I know a thing or two. But when it comes to technology and gadgets, I turn to experts Jeff Bakalar and Russ Frushtick. Jeff and Russ host The 404 Show, a popular CNET podcast that focuses on pop-culture, tech, movies, comics, video games and more. It’s a good arrangement: When Jeff and Russ have questions regarding their financial lives, they know who to call—and they really do, from time to time. When I need help purchasing a new phone or want to understand what lies ahead on the tech landscape, I return the favor. The technology world changes so fast it’s almost impossible to keep up with it. Every month it seems, there’s some new announcement—a hot new app, a popular gadget, a hopeful tech IPO, a disruptive innovation—it’s never ending. In this latest episode of “Better Off,” we touched on a variety of topics that we once thought we’d only see in a Hollywood movie:Artificial intelligence (AI)Virtual reality (VR)Self-driving vehicles UPS using drones to deliver packages We also talked about current issues: Uber versus the cab companies? Is the competition a good thing? Will it force the cab industry to reinvent itself? Will buying an Amazon Echo cause me to become incredibly lazy? Call me old fashioned but I actually like turning on the lights myself. I think I get points for being active on Twitter and Instagram...though I’m not sure you’ll see me wearing a virtual reality headset anytime soon.  That said, give this episode a listen, especially if you’re wondering if you really need to upgrade your phone every year or two. “Better Off” is sponsored by Betterment. Hi, it's Jill Schlesinger, and on this episode of Better Off, we're talking with the famous

podcast The 404's hosts Jeff Bacelar and Russ Frushdick.

A lot of the digital assistant stuff, your Alexis, your Google Homes, the Echo, that kind of stuff,

0:19.7

I think is going to play a major role in people's first experience with some kind of artificial intelligence.

0:26.5

I think Uber has a lot of baggage in terms of their brand and stuff like that. I mean, I was just in San Francisco and I literally did not use Uber once I use

0:33.5

lift the whole time and a lot of that has to do with their brand and their perception

0:38.1

that they're putting out there and it's pretty gross.

Welcome to the Betteroff Podcast sponsored by Betterment, the largest independent online financial advisor.

Okay, so here is a problem. When you book interviews and you just try to slam out a bunch of them, you can't run them all so quickly.

0:57.4

And then some of the material becomes slightly dated.

1:00.6

But that said, here's something kind of cool. We recorded this interview with my

1:06.3

tech gurus. This is Russ and Jeff and we were talking about Snap, which is the

1:11.5

parent organization of Snapchat.

1:14.6

And at the time we were talking about the IPO because it was worth gazillion dollars, but

1:19.4

then in the ensuing weeks what has happened is that SNAP shares fell below the initial public offering

1:27.6

price.

1:28.6

So the IPO price was 17 and shares are at about 15 and part of this is because really amazingly Morgan Stanley

1:36.4

which was the lead underwriter of the deal meaning the bank that decides the

1:41.0

IPO and the market value. Anyway the analysts from Morgan Stanley

1:45.2

downgraded it. So that doesn't really bode well and what has happened is now

1:49.2

everyone's like oh my God the snap is no longer going to be relevant because Instagram has a new thing

1:54.6

called Instagram stories and Facebook is going to eat their lunch and all this stuff.
