Dr Alice Hunt is a historian of monarchy at the University of Southampton,

and she told me more about what ceremony and

ritual have offered monarchs down the centuries. Today we're going to be talking about the British

monarchy's relationship with ceremony and spectacle over the centuries. Why has pomp and pageantry

been so important to royal figures in history?

Pomp and pageantry has always been part of the kind of arsenal of monarchy for a long time,

and particularly because it's a way of broadcasting their wealth and therefore their status and therefore their power.
