It exists and you can either choose to not play it and be ineffective or you can get smart about it and be effective.

You're doing what every effective professional does, which is

consider other people because you work in a people organization.

Simple as that.

Yeah, so most folks would not go around saying relationships don't matter, right?

Relationships do matter. Exactly. And that's what politics are.

Relationships, folks, it's just relationships. Get over yourself. yourself now if you don't know what I'm referring to you didn't listen to the last cast.
