This is a fascinating piece, it's by Daniel Jocelyn Siamon Toskey over at theconversation.com

and it's titled Why Good Friday was Dangerous for Jews in the Middle Ages and how that changed.

And he talks about, from the fourth century, the Catholic way of celebrating Good Friday,

I was to traditionally read from the Gospel of John's account of Jesus' crucifixion,

which specifically blames the Jews for basically the crucifixion of Jesus.

And during the medieval Good Friday service, Christians prayed for the Perfidious Jews,

the Perfidious deceitful, that God, quote, might remove the veil from their hearts so they

would know Jesus Christ. And then they also had a chant called, known as the reproaches,

which was sung in this piece. It was the voice of God accusing the Jewish people of faithlessness

in rejecting Jesus and crucifying him. So very often after these services on Good Friday,

again, medieval times and Catholic times, after the services people would leave the Catholic

church and go out and throw stones at the homes of Jews. This didn't change really in a big

way until after World War II. After the Holocaust, you know, the lot of Christian churches

realized that their own teachings and practices were contributing to that genocide of the Jews
