The campaign starting gun has been fired co-pilot because it's now less than a month until local elections in England on May 4th, across district council's unitary authorities and directly elected mayors.

The Tories held a low-key launch event last weekend, so low-key the press wasn't invited.

But we were allowed to use a rather strange stage photo of the Prime Minister in road workers boots bending down and staring at a pot-fold in a madly fashion.

Back in May 2019, the Tories lost over a thousand seats and control of several councils while the Lib Dems made gains.

The outcome this time could well determine if indeed Rishi Sunak, whose popularity in the polls has lately been going up, survives to lead his party into the next general election.

Which will probably be in the summer or autumn of 2024.

Now the Tories are in election mode, Swella Bravman fighting to keep her seat during a boundary change, has been campaigning on small boats and talking tough on grooming gangs.
