Welcome back to another gripping episode of "Police off the Cuff." I'm your host, Retired NYPD Sergeant Bill Cannon, and today, we're delving into a tragic and provocative case that has shaken the community to its core. We're talking about the brutal killing of 22-year-old nursing student Laken Riley at the University of Georgia—a campus that had prided itself on four decades without a murder. Our story begins with the unfortunate discovery of Laken's body in a wooded area behind Lake Herrick, following what should have been a routine jog near the intramural fields. As the details unfold, we find ourselves face-to-face with the harsh reality of unchecked entry into the United States. The suspect, Jose Antonio Ibada, a 26-year-old from Venezuela, entered the country illegally and is now behind bars facing an array of serious charges, including malice murder and kidnapping. We'll dissect the investigations led by the Athens Clark County Police and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, highlighting the pivotal role of technology in apprehending the suspect. Amidst the shock and mourning, we're also compelled to discuss broader issues: the vetting process for individuals entering the country, the impact on local communities, and the importance of personal safety. Join us as we navigate through this emotional case, share insights from law enforcement, and hear from our listeners about their thoughts and concerns on a crime that has disrupted the peace on a seemingly safe university campus. Stay tuned, and let's try to unpack the harrowing events that led to an end of innocence at UGA, right here on "Police off the Cuff." --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/otcpod1/support
