Summary

In this week’s Flightless Bird, David and Rob discuss Pokemon Trading Cards. They’re joined in the studio by Alex (@chantastic_collection) to get schooled on Pokemon fandom and trading cards (David and Rob open their first deck ever!), before David heads to New York to meet Dave Suchmann, a man who’s combined his love of Pokemon with his computer savvy to try and make a sustainable business trading Pokemon cards. Now of course Pokemon comes from Japan, but when it was introduced to America, and then the world between 1998 and 2000, it went ballistic. It’s generally agreed upon that Pokémon is the world's highest-grossing media franchise ever - leaving Marvel and Disney stuff in its wake. So, strap in and prepare to Catch ‘Em All! Hello, Davis. Hi, Roosevelt. How are you? I'm good. How are you? I'm good. I'm good. It's the height of summer over here, so it's very sweaty. I've got no air conditioning and so my apartment is very warm. Oh, that sounds so nice. Now, today's topic on flight, this bird, is Pokemon, and I hear you saying that's not

0:26.5

an American topic, but let's just say it's very, very popular in America.

0:32.5

Actually, I mean, specifically, it's about Pokemon cards.

0:35.4

Do you have any sort of of have you ever collected cards or

0:37.8

been interested in Pokemon at all? I feel like our friend Hayden plays Pokemon Go all the time.

0:42.5

So he's probably the guy to talk about it, isn't he? Yeah, I know. I'm surprised you haven't talked to him

0:48.1

or, you know, staged an intervention as part of this podcast. Have you had any Pokemon sort of interactions in your youth or old age?

0:57.5

I don't think I ever collected the cards, but definitely watched the original series

1:04.3

and had a little poster back when there were only like 150 Pokemon or so, because now

1:10.7

I feel like there are thousands.

1:13.0

It's very confusing.

1:14.6

What was on your poster?

1:16.6

It was, you know how you can get those fish posters with all the different fish types of fish and their names on it?

1:24.2

And you see them in the fish and chip shop.

1:26.1

That's a very New Zealand thing. Yeah,

1:28.7

New Zealand we have. It's all over the country, isn't it? Just fish of New Zealand lined up.

1:34.3

Yeah. How do I identify fish? Exactly. It was like that, but for Pokemon, in case you ever

1:39.6

encountered one, you can identify it. And what was it about the show that drew you in, do you think?

1:47.8

Great timing, you know, after school.

1:49.9

You want to watch some TV.

1:53.2

No, you know, they were cute.

1:55.0

The Pokemon are cute, and it's nice to have some friends that you can easily transport around in a little ball and
