Summary

The last in our position-ranking series, point guards are down beyond the elite Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. As style of play has changed, teams are increasingly relying on bigger players to create offense. Where does that leave small point guards? Many big names β€” including Stephen Curry, Jalen Brunson, Tyrese Haliburton, Darius Garland, Kyrie Irving, Damian Lillard, Ja Morant, Trae Young and Fred VanVleet β€” face far more uncertainty than a year ago. But, as always, there are rising young players like Tyrese Maxey and Dylan Harper ready to climb the rankings.

All right, welcome on to our final position rankings.

0:03.2

This will be the point guards.

0:05.6

And a lot of interesting stuff to talk about here.

0:08.2

It's maybe an evolving position in terms of its value overall.

0:13.3

And still, though, lots and lots of star power at this position.

0:18.4

So what are you expecting to get, Danny, from the point guard position?

0:23.3

0:34.8

you are looking at a player who has a larger than larger than normal traditional

0:39.6

usage. So basketball reference version, if we're going for the full average over 21, and then if you

0:45.8

narrow it to the players who played a lot, then it's even above 22%. So if you thought that it would be

0:51.0

even, it would be a 20. And then if you go to total creation,

1:00.7

which is what we've been using, you're at 35%. So these are players who, in general, not exclusively,

1:04.7

are going to have the ball in their hands a lot. Yeah. So our total creation metric, what percentage of plays for your team are you either shooting, turning it over, or throwing a

1:10.6

pass that leads to a shot or

1:13.0

free throws so the positional average there is 36% and passing creation that's just the passing

1:20.4

component of that the positional average is 14% and so that's the biggest difference probably

1:26.4

among anything else is that all the other

1:28.7

positional averages are basically around 7. Now, you'll have guys at those positions who are up in that

1:33.8

point guard range or even above it. But basically, there are a few guys for whom this isn't necessarily
