First up, we have a story on an iron-eating fungus.

When I think about weathering rocks, I think about wind erosion, water erosion,

but I don't think about all these tiny microbes gnawing away at stone. Nala, how does a hungry fungus take down a wild rock? Well, this type of fungus

starts by releasing acid that breaks down the rock, and then it releases chemicals that binds

to iron in the rock and extract it for the

fungus to use as food. And after the fungus has stripped out all the iron, it sends out

filaments to dig into the depleted rock and expose new surfaces. And these filaments are incredibly
