Summary

In this Short, John likens throwing a pool party to building soil microbial populations. Just like a successful pool party needs the right environment with food, drinks, and a crowd, building a healthy soil ecosystem requires appropriate soil conditions, nutrients, and a diverse microbial community.

John emphasizes the importance of "keystone species" which are essential microbial species that attract and support a larger community, similar to inviting a few socially connected individuals to a party to attract more guests. He also highlights the role of plants in introducing a wide variety of microbes to the soil, advocating for diverse plant species to create robust and resilient soil ecosystems.

About John Kempf
John Kempf is the founder of Advancing Eco Agriculture (AEA). A top expert in biological and regenerative farming, John founded AEA in 2006 to help fellow farmers by providing the education, tools, and strategies that will have a global effect on the food supply and those who grow it.

Through intense study and the knowledge gleaned from many industry leaders, John is building a comprehensive systems-based approach to plant nutrition – a system solidly based on the sciences of plant physiology, mineral nutrition, and soil microbiology.

Support For This Show & Helping You Grow
Since 2006, AEA has been on a mission to help growers become more resilient, efficient, and profitable with regenerative agriculture.

AEA works directly with growers to apply its unique line of liquid mineral crop nutrition products and biological inoculants. Informed by cutting-edge plant and soil data-gathering techniques, AEA's science-based programs empower farm operations to meet the crop quality markers that matter the most.

AEA has created real and lasting change on millions of acres with its products and data-driven services by working hand-in-hand with growers to produce healthier soil, stronger crops, and higher profits.

Beyond working on the ground with growers, AEA leads in regenerative agriculture media and education, producing and distributing the popular and highly-regarded Regenerative Agriculture Podcast, inspiring webinars, and other educational content that serve as go-to resources for growers worldwide.

Hi, friends, this is John. Welcome back to the Regionative Agriculture Podcast.

I've been looking forward to a fun conversation today. It's the middle of June.

Temperatures for the week are forecast to be topping out in the 90s every day.

0:14.0

And over the weekend, I set up a small pool for my daughter to play in.

And I was reminded of an analogy that a friend shared with me

0:22.6

a long time ago on the similarities between having a pool party and building soil microbial

0:30.8

populations. This might not seem like a very apt analogy, but it brings out a couple of highlights that I think are very

0:39.0

important for us to think about that we often don't think about. When we think about having a pool

0:44.9

party, what is it that we want to achieve and what does it take to have that, or to put together

0:51.2

a really great pool party. When you think about, of course, to have a pool party be very successful or to be considered successful,

0:57.0

you need a crowd.

0:57.7

You need lots of people that are having a good time, having lots of fun with each other.

1:01.3

And to facilitate that, it's easiest to facilitate that when you have the right ecological niche.

1:06.0

In other words, when you have the right temperatures, when you have elevated temperatures

1:08.9

and the right weather conditions,

1:12.9

a pool party becomes a lot more appealing very quickly. Of course, you need to have the pool itself,

1:17.9

you need food, you need drinks, you need good company. We could transfer all of these pieces to

1:24.3

thinking about the soil ecosystem and the soil microbiome.

1:29.2

You need the right environment, the right ecological niche type environment.

1:33.2

So similar to where with a pool you need to have the right temperatures in soil, you also

1:38.2

need to have the right temperatures.

1:39.5

You need to have the equivalent of the pool is that you need to have soil that can be colonized, soil
