that following the announcement that you can now pose questions and we'll answer them in these

bonus episodes that will put out on a regular basis.

I'm pleased to say that we've got six questions that have come in from people who listen to the podcast.

And I'm hoping that these questions will prompt some more of you to ask other questions,

either based on current material or perhaps some of your favourite episodes. So let's begin. Question 1 from Stella, what did the professional soldiers

think of the civilian soldiers?

And this came out of the episode that looked at from training to trenches,

where we followed a kind of typical story of a British soldier from enlistment and training

to them being dispatched to the front line.

And we looked at how the army evolved from the outbreak of war with a volunteer but professional

army, different to the other armies within Europe, which were all conscript armies when

at a given age young men were conscripted

and did a certain amount of military service, then went to territories and reserves, and then were

called up. And it meant that armies like France and Germany, who had relatively small standing
