Summary

News stories on bees that live perilously close to the mouth of a volcano, diagnosing arthritis in dinosaur bones, and the evolution of the female orgasm, with David Grimm.  From the magazine Rivers deliver water to the ocean but water is also discharged along the coast in a much more diffuse way. This “submarine groundwater discharge” carries dissolved chemicals out to sea. But the underground nature of these outflows makes them difficult to quantify.  Audrey Sawyer talks with Sarah Crespi about the scale of this discharge and how it affects coastal waters surrounding the United States.  [Image: Hilary Erenler/Music: Jeffrey Cook] Learn more about your ad choices. First up, we have a story on bees that live dangerously, and I mean really

1:12.2

dangerously, on the side of a volcano in a place called the kill zone. Okay, I guess they're not

1:18.9

going to be making honeycomb up there. What are they doing, Dave? They are surprisingly buzzing

1:24.7

around, and you wouldn't expect them or pretty much any life in this zone.

1:29.9

But this little bee, which has a scientific name, Anthrophora Squamulosa, which I'm probably

1:36.6

mispronouncing, is a survivor and has been spotted. In fact, not just one bee, but potentially

1:42.3

up to 2,000 of these bees are thought to be living on the side of this volcano.

1:47.6

This is a volcano called Messiah, and it's just outside the Nicaraguan capital city of Monagwa.

1:53.5

Now, this isn't an experimental study where people added bees to a volcano and decided to see how they can survive.

1:59.6

This is an observational study. What did they

2:01.6

observe over time as they followed these bees around the volcano? So they follow these bees around,
