Summary

Today, in the very chamber overun by a violent mob just a few months ago, Senate Republicans blocked the creation of a bipartisan commission to investigate the attack. Anderson talks with Paul Begala and Scott Jennings about the politics and repercussions of the vote. And the writers of the 2018 book "How Democracies Die" talk to Anderson about today’s vote. When the book was published then-presidential candidate Biden was reportedly obsessed with it and carried it everywhere.  Also, a Tennessee pastor is under fire for preaching lies about Covid and the vaccines. CNN's Elle Reeve first talked to the pastor back in December and he doubled-down on his mistruths. Now almost six months later, a family whose uncle attended the church, and died of Covid, is distraught over the misinformation from the pulpit. Elle Reeve went back to the church and wanted to ask the pastor more questions but it didn't go as planned. Good evening. We begin tonight with what happens when courage is called for, but cowardice answers.

Today in the very chamber, overrun by a violent mob just a few months ago, Senate Republicans

0:10.8

blocked the creation of a bipartisan commission to investigate that attack. The bill actually

0:15.6

got far more, yes, than no votes. 54 versus 35, but under the strange rules of the Senate,

0:22.0

35, Trump's 54 and 60 votes are needed for most bills to pass. Which means the minority

0:27.7

party can block nearly anything, even a bill like this one, even to investigate the attack

0:32.6

that sent many of the same senators who voted no today into hiding.

Do my Republican colleagues remember that day? Do my Republican colleagues remember the

0:43.9

savage mob calling for the execution of Mike Pence, the makeshift gallows outside the

Capitol? They remember. And it's not like there's nothing more to be learned, just today

0:56.8

a CNN review of court records and Pentagon documents reveal that one in 10 people charge

1:01.4

in the insurrection or veterans are current service members. A quarter of those defendants

1:05.7

have connections to right wing extremist groups. So how deep do those extremists in insurrection

1:10.8

as ties reach into the ranks? It's a troubling question we don't know. The fact is, there's

1:15.5

a lot we still don't know about the day, but also the threat to democracy, which clearly

1:19.6

still exists. So what could be more frightening to these senators than that? A minority leader

1:24.7

Mitch McConnell who lobbied hard against the bill said nothing on the floor today or after

1:28.4

the vote. However, Alaska, Senator Lisa Murkowski, one of six Republicans who voted yes, spoke

1:33.4

to the question late last night. Before playing what she said, I just want to read all six

1:37.5

names. Bill Cassidy, Susan Collins, Rob Portman, Ben Sass, Mitt Romney, and Senator Murkowski.

1:45.2

To be making a decision for the short term political gain at the expense of understanding

1:54.6

and acknowledging what was in front of us on January 6th. I think we need to look at that
