This is a podcast extra from nature, hosted by Adam Levy.

0:08.6

Is our universe beautiful? Is there beauty in its underlying physics, just as we see beauty in a Monet painting or a natural landscape?

0:18.7

I'm in the studio with Frank Wilcheckek, theoretical physicist and Nobel laureate.

0:23.6

Frank has just published a book called

0:25.6

A Beautiful Question, Finding Nature's Deep Design.

0:28.6

In it, he asks, does the world embody beautiful ideas?

0:32.6

In other words, are the fundamental laws of physics

0:35.6

that describe our universe beautiful?

0:39.3

Frank, what initially prompted you to ask this question?

0:43.0

It grew out of a lecture that I gave at Cambridge University at Darwin College.

1:23.6

me into science in the first place.

1:25.6

Now, I don't want to spoil the whole book, but I think that

1:28.3

for most people who know you and know about the subject, they might suspect that you feel

1:32.9

the universe does indeed operate in a beautiful way. Well, yes, not only do I feel that, but I think

1:38.7

I've demonstrated it's not just a lot of loose talk. I have definite documentation and ideas about what the world is,
