And today we get to listen to John Gilmore's 2014 Palenque Norte lecture

that was held at this year's Burning Man event.

Now, over the years, I've only been able to get a hold of a very few other talks by John,

but whenever I do get one,

I podcast it.

While John has had a long and productive career in the tech industry, today he's probably

best known outside of Silicon Valley as a co-founder of the EFF, the Electronic Frontier Foundation.

And if you don't know about EFF, then, well, what's wrong with you?

Of all the organizations that are working to keep cyberspace free, EFF is without a doubt, at least in my mind, the leader in the field.

And by the way, here's a little trivia for you.

The other two co-founders of EFF are Mitch Kapoor, who, by the way, is the very

first computer celebrity whose name I learned. And the other is John Perry Barlow, who, whether

you know it or not, is indirectly remembered in the introduction to each and every one of these

podcasts. You see, John Perry Barlow is credited with being the first person

to use the word cyberdelic in print. And I am very pleased to mention that John Perry was also in

attendance at one of the very first Plankin Orte lectures back in 2003. It was the Alex and Allison Gray

talk, if I remember correctly.

Now, when I return, after we listen to John Gilmore's talk right now, I'll let you know about an interesting little coincidence from my past in which, unbeknownst to John, he played a part.
