Summary

Guest speaker: John Gilmore PROGRAM NOTES: [NOTE: All quotations are by John Gilmore.] “I thank medical marijuana for breaking down social resistance to recreational marijuana.” “In medical marijuana states it was the gay community that developed political skills in working for their own liberation that then applied those skills to liberate marijuana in a medical context in the aids fight. Those people blazed a trail for us.” “I think encouraging courage among people who are in the know to actually say what they know is a way to have positive social change. It's a way that the powerful are vulnerable to the ordinary people.” Download MP3 PCs – Right click, select option Macs – Ctrl-Click, select option HTTPS Everywhere HTTPS Everywhere is a Firefox, Chrome, and Opera extension that encrypts your communications with many major websites, making your browsing more secure. Greetings from Cyberdelian Space.

Greetings from Cyberdelic Salon. is Lorenzo, and I'm your host here in the Psychedelic Salon.

0:23.9

And today we get to listen to John Gilmore's 2014 Palenque Norte lecture

0:28.7

that was held at this year's Burning Man event.

0:32.1

Now, over the years, I've only been able to get a hold of a very few other talks by John,

0:36.4

but whenever I do get one,

0:38.0

I podcast it.

0:39.4

While John has had a long and productive career in the tech industry, today he's probably

0:44.4

best known outside of Silicon Valley as a co-founder of the EFF, the Electronic Frontier Foundation.

0:51.1

And if you don't know about EFF, then, well, what's wrong with you?

0:54.2

Of all the organizations that are working to keep cyberspace free, EFF is without a doubt, at least in my mind, the leader in the field.

1:04.0

And by the way, here's a little trivia for you.

1:08.0

The other two co-founders of EFF are Mitch Kapoor, who, by the way, is the very

1:13.1

first computer celebrity whose name I learned. And the other is John Perry Barlow, who, whether

1:19.4

you know it or not, is indirectly remembered in the introduction to each and every one of these

1:24.2

podcasts. You see, John Perry Barlow is credited with being the first person

1:29.3

to use the word cyberdelic in print. And I am very pleased to mention that John Perry was also in

1:35.9

attendance at one of the very first Plankin Orte lectures back in 2003. It was the Alex and Allison Gray

1:43.6

talk, if I remember correctly.

1:46.2

Now, when I return, after we listen to John Gilmore's talk right now, I'll let you know about an interesting little coincidence from my past in which, unbeknownst to John, he played a part.

1:57.2

And now let's join Christopher Peza as he introduces today's speaker.
