Summary

You think you know Pocahontas, but trust us, this is not the story you in history class (or from a raccoon and a willow tree...we do love you though, Meeko). This week, we’re breaking down the real history of Pocahontas, the woman behind the myth. From her kidnapping and forced assimilation to how England turned her into a PR campaign for colonization. Which also brings us to the MMIW (Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women) crisis. Although we can never give a voice back to all of the MMIW, we can change how society values Native American women. That evolution can only begin with the telling of the real story of Pocahontas, the most famous missing Native American woman in history. in history class, but God, I hope they taught it differently than Disney did. I don't recall. I actually

1:16.9

don't recall how we learned about it. I pray it was nothing like the film. Yeah. But I don't really

1:24.3

remember, Claire, and that's also kind of upsetting. No, same.

1:27.8

I mean, I don't remember a lot about what happened in school. I was like in a deep depression in high school, so a lot of things are blurry. But I am hoping that this was in our curriculum. When did, like, if we were, when we learned about Pocahontas, what age would that have been? That's right, everyone. we are talking about the one of the only Pocahontas today.

1:45.2

I would have learned about the sophomore APUS history, a push, if you will. A push. Yeah, God, I don't remember, but I'm sorry and I feel like my memory is fading. And that's scary. That's scary. Well, you know, the state of the world, sometimes we really just got to check out. Time to disassociate, but also keep learning about the important things. And that is called duality,

2:19.1

Humble myself.

Yeah.

2:20.5

And just say, I don't really know much.

2:22.8

I know that she was real.

2:25.9

Mm-hmm.

2:26.5

And that the movie did not do her justice and like really bad things happened to her from

colonization.
