Rose was one of the greatest hitters in baseball history

and holds a major league baseball record

for all- time hits.

But Pete Rose never made it into the Baseball Hall of Fame

because he was banned for life for betting on games

while manager of the Cincinnati Reds.

Rose later admitted to betting on his own team's games,

but said he never threw a game

and never bet against his own team.

Rose played in the majors for 24 years.

Pete Rose was 83 years old.
