Every society has blasphemy laws. You can tell what the God of a society is by what its people are not

allowed to say or believe. Likewise, every society has creeds and confessions. You can tell what the God of a culture is by what its people are required to say or believe.

These societal orthodoxies are the foundations, the

cornerstones, the pillars, and the buttresses of a society's worldview.

Its essential biases, unconscious assumptions, and unquestioned presuppositions.

Not surprisingly, a culture's educational standards are built upon those biases.

Schools by their very nature are designed to equip and socialize the rising generations in accord with the culture's prevailing

worldview assumptions. A prerequisite to either revolutionizing or reforming a society is to revolutionize or reform its educational

curriculum first. Nearly a century ago, Henry Van Til, succinctly summarized this Christian understanding of social anthropology writing,

culture is religion externalized.

Pluralism, rightly understood, therefore,

is merely a temporary transitional stage

between one worldview and another. In a practice, it is an attempt

to forge a cultural consensus on the fact that there can be no cultural consensus. It's the

unspoken assumption that a happy and harmonious society can be maintained only

so long as the only common belief is that there are no common beliefs.

It is the reluctant affirmation that the only absolute is that there absolutely must not be any absolutes.

But surely it is just as absurd to say that any idea is as valid as every idea as it is to say that bad ideas are as helpful as good ideas.
