Summary

The end of the NFL regular season brings two major topics: playoffs and awards. Charles Robinson is joined by Yahoo's Shalise Manza Young to kick off the mid-week podcast discussing the MVP award and recent comments made by Chicago based reporter Hub Arkush that he would not be voting for Aaron Rodgers to take home his second consecutive trophy.Moving onto the playoffs, Charles breaks down where the playoff seeding stands with just one more weekend to go and why the NFC has gone from predictable to unpredictable thanks to the Green Bay Packers while the AFC has done the opposite as the Tennessee Titans are just one win away from securing the conference's top seed. (17:05)Next, Charles & Shalise revisit Sunday's drama surrounding Antonio Brown. They discuss the likely reasons he has not yet been released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers & why AB deserves more scrutiny than other athletes who step away due to mental health issues. (34:05)Finally, they close out the show discussing a handful of coordinators and former head coaches who are likely to make the rounds as head coaching interviews kick off in the next few weeks. Back in 2003, I remember sitting in a small office with an NFL personnel executive, and

0:12.8

talking through the general mechanics of how the pre-draft process worked for teams.

0:17.6

I was only a few years into the beat, and I was still learning what took place under

0:21.2

the hood when it came to vetting potential draft picks.

0:24.6

And when we got to the subject of player interviews, I still remember one particular

0:28.3

exchange vividly.

0:30.1

The executive said to me, sometimes you have to kind of shake things up, throw them off

0:33.5

kilter.

0:34.5

And I asked, like what?

0:37.3

So he went down a list of uncomfortable questions that he thought players were rarely

0:41.3

prepared for.

0:42.5

He mentioned asking a prospect if he thought the head coach's wife was attractive.

0:47.1

He'd asked a player about cheating on his girlfriend with a tutor or how often he watched

0:51.2

pornography.

0:52.8

And then the executive recounted a specific instance where an assistant coach had sat quietly

0:57.9

listening to a group interview, and then suddenly interjected with a question about whether

1:02.6

this particular player had ever committed a specific sexual act on another man.

1:07.9

That latter instance was recounted with a deep belly laugh by the executive.

1:12.7

Now, that moment is relevant today because the league took arguably its biggest step yet

1:18.4

in trying to remove some of the unchecked humiliation that's occurred in the draft process.

1:24.0

With the league office trying to move the NFL into a more inclusive and non-discriminatory

light, vice president of football operations, Troy Vincent sent a memo to all 32 teams
