Summary

#975 Summary Our guest is Josh Leyes from Par4Success talking about the importance of fitness for golfers, particularly those over 50. We discuss how aging affects golf performance, the significance of rotary mobility, and the foundational aspects of a fitness program tailored for golfers. Josh emphasizes the need for golfers to understand their physical limitations and how to address them to improve their game and prevent injuries. The conversation also covers the four pillars of golf performance: technique, equipment, mobility, and strength. Josh emphasizes that golfers of all ages can enhance their game through consistent training and rehabilitation, regardless of their physical condition. Ultimately, the conversation underscores the significance of addressing physical limitations to achieve better results on the golf course. Par4Success.com offers a home mobility assessment atTakeaways The ultimate goal for golfers is to shoot their age. Longevity in golf means playing at any desired level for as long as possible. Aging leads to a decrease in club head speed and distance. Simple, consistent exercises can help golfers improve performance and reduce pain. Rotary mobility is the foundation of a golfer's fitness. Mobility assessments can help identify areas for improvement. Golfers can improve their game at any age. Balance is crucial for a successful golf swing. Hi, I'm Vern Coats from Marion, Iowa. I play golf at Indian Creek Country Club, and this is Golf Smarter

0:09.9

episode number 975. Think of a pyramid. The most important part of the pyramid is obviously

0:15.3

is the foundation. If we don't have a wide base in foundation, the top's not going to stay put.

0:20.1

So in any building, we want a solid

0:21.8

foundation and you always start with that. You can't start a building by building a roof first. It

0:26.2

just doesn't work. So our foundation has to be rotary mobility. And golfers, they're like,

0:31.3

oh yeah, I know I need to be flexible, but people don't like to do flexibility one. Because number one,

0:36.4

they may not know exactly what they need to do

0:38.4

it's like you know i can stretch my quads i can stretch my hamstrings i might do a few trunk rotations

0:43.1

like this but is that really going to make a measurable difference and so what we found is that number one

0:48.5

measure the areas where we need to rotate better and for a golfer those are the four key areas where we

0:54.1

need to rotate are your neck so a golfer, those are the four key areas where we need to rotate

0:54.9

are your neck. So you can actually turn and see the ball. If you just do a trunk turn with your body

1:01.1

and then you try in back swing position, then I try and rotate my head to look at the ball. I need a good

1:06.0

amount of neck rotation. And for people that if they start to turn their head or if you notice

1:10.2

if you're driving and you kind of have to turn your whole body to check behind you, golfers would have to do a shoulder check. They're finding that the next type, that's a sure sign that your neck mobility is limited.
