Summary

Ad Astra's Mark Carter took Planetary Radio Host Mat Kaplan on a great tour of the company's facility in mid-November of 2015. Space and science geeks are going to love this mostly unedited audio recording. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Are you're familiar with the guts of how the rocket works?

0:02.8

Somewhat.

0:03.8

Okay.

0:04.8

Well we start, it's really a two-stage system.

0:07.8

So we start with just neutral gas.

0:09.3

We like to use argon here.

0:10.7

It's a good match for our magnets.

0:12.1

It also gives us very good

0:13.4

specific impulse about 5,000 seconds and that's that's a good it's good and

0:18.8

efficient to use and the magnetic fields are not too to constrain but

0:22.1

gas comes into this first section,

0:24.2

and we have superconducting magnets around the whole system.

0:27.7

The system then is broken into two parts.

0:30.5

One's a plasma source, so the gas gets turned into plasma charged so

0:34.2

that it can respond to the magnetic field and then we choke it through the

0:37.7

second this middle section so that gas can't really escape past this So in this region it's completely plasma and here it's

0:46.2

relatively cool 10,000 degrees is relatively. By plasma standards that's

0:51.2

pretty cool. Your fluorescent lights are not quite that warm, but they're warmer than you think in the plasma itself.

0:57.0

But it's a very diffuse. This is not like air densities. It's below, well below that for for density but the temperature is very high but

1:04.3

in the second section we go up to millions of degrees and here you really do not

1:08.1

want plasma touching any material surfaces it really is a magnetic bottle.

1:13.0

Like a fusion reactor.
