Perhaps then that is not for you to decide, the law giver replied

share with me your woes and he stow upon me the honor of being your judge.

The student then confessed that which had caused him to stress. My neighbor has offended me as a matter of sport.

I therefore offended him back. Yet this only led to an escalation of affairs.

I have now chosen to ignore all further goading

against me, acknowledging that to respond will avail me not. But from this he has

concluded a victory which has encouraged him to hire a fence.

And it's this that causes you pain? The law giver asked.

No, rather my decision was I wise to choose to ignore or a fool to

not defend my honor the lawgiver considered as he basked in the glory of the setting sun and at length

delivered his verdict. It is said that the difference between the wise and the foolish is that the

law giver laid

law is that the wise is capable of learning from having made a mistake.

The law giver laid his hand upon the shoulder of his disciple
