A passenger plane carrying 242 people has crashed shortly after taking off from an airport in India.

The aircraft was leaving the western city of Ahmedabad and was heading to London's Gatwick Airport.

Emdebad's police commissioner says there appears to be no survivors,

and CNN is working to confirm the number of casualties.

Air India says citizens of India, the UK, Canada and Portugal were on board the plane.

Tracking site Flight Radar 24 shows the signal with a Boeing 7878 was lost when it was at around 625 feet.

Indian officials say the plane gave out a Mayday call to air traffic control shortly after takeoff,

but then didn't respond and crashed outside of the airport grounds.

Thick plumes of smoke could be seen rising over, Emdebad, with images showing scorched trees and a fire-blackened building.

Footage shows chaos on the ground, with sirens blaring, whistle sounding and emergency crews

battling smoke and debris.

Boeing says it's working to get more details.
