Summary

Nando Parrado and Roberto Canessa braved 36 miles of brutal mountain terrain to escape the Andes and save their teammates. But this isn’t where the story of Flight 571 ends. While hiking near the crash site in 2005, mountaineer Ricardo Peña discovered a jacket belonging to one of the survivors and wreckage from the plane that had never been found. The following year Peña led a National Geographic expedition retracing the route Nando and Roberto took out of the Andes.

On this episode, Peña joins host Cassie de Pecol to discuss how his discovery led to new insights about the crash and what it was like to walk in the survivors’ footsteps.

I want to ask you about your expeditions in the Andes. But first, can you tell us how you learned

1:26.0

about Miracle Flight 571 and the old Christian's rugby team?

1:30.6

Yeah, the story of the Andes survivors was talked about a lot in Mexico. I grew up in Mexico City.

1:37.6

It was talked about everywhere all over the world, but it hit even closer in Latin American

1:42.2

countries. And Mexicans made a movie in 1974, which now you can find that movie entitled Survive.

1:50.1

I was about six years old when I first saw the movie. It was a very bad movie, but the story was

1:56.0

so powerful that it made a huge impact. We would catch it on TV. It's just an incredible story.

And I also always had a fascination with snow, wanted to touch snow, go to snowy places, and that

2:08.4

whole story took place on a glacier. The snow was what was trapping them.

2:12.6

You mentioned the snow. What else about the story captured your imagination?
