A massive search operation is underway after a passenger plane crashed mid-air with a US Army

Black Hawk helicopter last night just outside Washington, D.C. There were 64 people on board

the American Airlines flight, which was flying from Wichita, Kansas, to Reagan

National Airport, and there were three soldiers on the helicopter training flight.

Hundreds of first responders are searching the freezing Potomac River, where the aircraft

crashed after colliding.

But so far, a law enforcement source says no survivors have been pulled from the water,

and officials say there have been fatalities. The source said the plane is in pieces in the water,

and the helicopter is in the river nearby. D.C. Fire and EMS Chief John Donnelly says the conditions

are tough for rescue workers.

There's not a lot of lights.

You're out there searching every square inch of space to see if you can find anybody.

Divers are doing the same thing in the water.

The water is dark.

It is murky.

And that is a very tough condition for them to dive in.
