Tomorrow on Ash Wednesday,

you will hear Jesus give a plan for spiritual growth outlined by almsgiving, prayer, and fasting.

Do you have your plan for Lent ready?

Well let's begin in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.

Let's call to mind all those we've promised to pray for.

Why does Jesus want us to give away money fast and pray because God alone satisfies.

There is nothing we can buy, nothing we can put in our mouth, and no way we can spend our time that will satisfy our hunger and thirst for

God but God.

We can receive God immediately by prayer even if we do not sense it because the presence of God goes deeper than the level of the senses,

but to receive God more completely, we need to break some of our

addictions. We need to break our addiction to self-reliance by giving away our

money. We need to break our addictions to the pleasures of

our five senses by fasting. And therefore Jesus says, when and not if you give alms, pray and fast, because he knows

these are necessary to reach a greater union with God and a deeper happiness.

So what will your plan for Lent be?

Our Father who art in heaven, hollow it be your name, Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth

as it is in heaven.

Give us to stay our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead

us not into temptation but deliver us from evil, Amen.
