Summary

We revisit the 'Pirates & Pipe Tobacco' this series in honor of Beau's new project 'Eversail Vol 1: The Pirate's Daughter' Please consider supporting this project at www.FindEversail.com

Formerly ‘Heroes of the Bowl’, The Half Bowl Histories series takes a look into the history, lore, and legacy of individuals, places, and events of interest that helped shape the world we know today for good and for ill. Here we get a chance to revisit some of the famous pipe smokers we’ve covered in the past and shift the focus from what they loved to who they were and the complexities of their lives. This week: Mary Read

Pipe Question: I really enjoy listening to Country Squire Radio. I am sitting here watching Bilbo smoke his pipe at the beginning of “The Hobbit”. It made me think of a question. Some of us like vintage tobacco. What are the oldest, original, blends still being produced today? By family, like Virginias, Vapers, Balkan, etc.? Thanks to both of you for a wonderful virtual pipe club! - Ryan Miller

Listener Feedback:

  • (Kane) Good Evening Gents, I’m currently smoking Northwest Trek out of my Missouri Meerschaum up here in good ol Peoria, Illinois. I must say that this blend is maybe my new favorite. I was hoping you could lead to some similar blends so to add to my collection.

Also, it inspired me to go Squire Select on this but in reverse order. I created a cocktail that I think pairs well with the cocktail. It’s kind of the Frankenstein mix between a Black Manhattan and a Brooklyn with some coffee flavors added in.

2 oz FEW Cold Cut Bourbon

1 oz Amaro Averna

1/4 oz Maraschino Liqueur

1/4 oz Mr Black Coffee Liqueur

1 dash orange bitters

I appreciate all that you guys do as you’ve been a integral part of my pipe smoking journey. Keep up the good work.  - Kane

enjoying this beautiful Las Vegas morning. Tell you what, man, like, so we, right now, we're recording in my room. Yeah. And it's situated as on the desert side, although you really, let's be honest, it's all desert. It's all desert, right? But that, but most hotels in Las Vegas, they have like a like a strip view, like a view of the Las Vegas strip. Oh, no, tomorrow we're doing it from your room where there's a strip and like everything else. Like, like, you definitely got the premium room here. The rooms are either the strip view or the mountain view. That's got, you see that a lot. And so, Beau's, that, Beau's room actually is overlooking the city and the mountains. And it's actually, I actually kind of prefer it to be. It's really beautiful. And what's happening right now outside the window I've noticed over the past probably 30 minutes is a dust storm. Is that what that is? Because I noticed that like a haze that was covering the mountain. And so it's interesting, you know, that's just something unique, or not new unique to Las Vegas, but certainly that we're not familiar with where we come from. Yeah, just in this area. Yeah, it's just the, the wind blows. And it's like, well, it's, it's a dust storm. And, uh, and there it is. But Las Vegas is, you know, people think of it as gambling and casinos and shows and all this kind of stuff. But it's kind of beautiful. Like the surrounding area, it's certainly desolate, but it's, it really is beautiful. It's, it's gorgeous, man. Well, hey, we're, we're, uh, we're out here, of course, because we've got the Las Vegas pipe show that we'll be attending this, uh, this afternoon. It's interesting because it makes no good to promote it because by the time this episode goes out. As this episode, yeah, if both episodes, yeah, then it'll have already come and gone. That's right. I'm sure we'll have had a, had a great time. That's right. But the great thing is our listeners get to look forward to hearing that episode because that'll be coming out, probably around Thanksgiving or something like that. So we're looking forward to putting that out for y'all.

Man, speaking of looking forward to putting things out, we are so thankful that we can put out

out. We've got a new joining at the Squire level. We've got Kevin Boutke. Kevin Bok, Bok, Bok, or Bout. Like

2:21.1

bark, B, A, C. Yeah, I, I legitimately don't know how to say his last name. Okay.

2:27.3

But it's Kevin Bock. I'm, I'm balking at the fact that you could not say his last name. That's a word.

2:33.8

It's not. No, it is. Maybe it's not. Kevin, thank you so much foralking at the fact that you could not say his last name. That's a word. It's not.

2:34.4

No, it is.

3:08.1

Maybe it's not. Kevin, thank you so much for joining us at the Squire level and for your support. We also want to give a shout out. We got two new patrons as well, Ben Dean and DeGeorge Ivanov. That one, man, that's a freebie right now. No, no. Two patrons, Ben Dean and DeGeorgie Ivanov. I try to butcher like our page, like our club member names as like a benefit for being a club member. And so typically I just kind of read the patron names. The patrons get, get. Yeah. Yeah, de George, that's that's a freebie. Man, brother, we appreciate you. Thank you so much. Mr. Ivanov.

3:42.7

We certainly, we very much appreciate you. Absolutely. Absolutely. Forgive our continued ignorance on most things. Now, I'm excited. I am excited today. I am so excited. You are excited today. You should be excited. This is good. So, all right, a couple things I want to acknowledge as the listener got this episode, as they saw the title and everything else. Because, you know, not even that long time listeners know, but at least people who have been tuning in for a little bit over a year, no. Yeah. Or even just this year, because it was such a thing at the beginning. We recently rebranded our Heroes of the Bowl series, which I think we said we'd never say the name of again, and well, there I just did it. But we rebranded

that to half-bull history. Half-bow histories, yep. And the idea was it was a merger of a couple
