Summary

A deep dive into the manosphere, with the scholar who knows it best, Louis Bachaud.

The manosphere is a constellation of 5 loosely affiliated communities, including pick-up artists (PUAs), men's rights activists (MRAs), "Men Going Their Own Way" (MGTOW), incels (the "Black Pill" communiy), and the "Red Pill" community. Louis details the history of the manosphere, describes the current factions and their differences, and guides us through their use and misuse of science, especially evolutionary psychology. The episode opens with a systematic critique of the manosphere, and the interview starts around 34 minutes in. Enjoy.

I was at a conference in London early last year to give a talk on infidelity from an evolutionary

perspective, and Candace Blake, my supervisor, told me she wanted to introduce me to someone. She said

something like, you got to meet this guy, he's read a million words of Manosphere writing. And then

she shot me a wide-eyed, tight-lipped smile. Did I hear her write a million words?

0:24.5

I wasn't aware that there were a million words to read on the subject. The Manosphere is an online

web of communities centered around men. This includes in the main five groups that's pickup artists, if you remember them,

0:39.2

men's rights activists, mig Tao, a male separatist movement, InSels, who we've spoken about

at length in the past, and the Red Pill community, which I think it's fair to say is where

0:50.5

Andrew Tate and his brother got their big break. They certainly borrowed and rebranded their analogy to The Matrix,

but I'm going to follow the lead of today's guest here

and note that the Tates have distanced themselves verbally from the red pill as, quote, unquote, dorks.

And even before that, they've always seemed, at least to me, to be embarrassed

by the association. And honestly, I get it, right? People in and adjacent to these five groups

saying really negative things about me all the time. And instead of being insulted, I mainly feel embarrassed that they know who I am.

Chris Williamson recently told me that me, him, and a few other public thinkers have been dubbed

the intellectual manosphere by critics within the monosphere.

He joked that if you're going to give us a name by which to dislike us, you shouldn't make it

sound so cool.

1:49.8

And intellectual Manusphere does sound kind of cool if you take it out of the context of the

usual meaning of Manusphere.

But I'm hoping the name won't stick because, to start with, it's a misnomer. My audience has always been mostly women in terms of following, but especially in terms of viewership.

And I don't know Chris's analytics, but my business partner went to a love event of his and told me, regardless of the online
