Summary

Pontius Pilate was the Prefect appointed by Rome to oversee central Israel, including the city of Jerusalem, during the time of Christ. In fact, he became the pivotal figure in sentencing Jesus to death by crucifixion. Ironically, Pilate had determined three times that Jesus was not guilty of being condemned to death. So then why did he end up sentencing Him to death after all? Answer? Because Pilate had a weakness for what other people thought; and that weakness moved Pilate off center from what he knew was right. Truth is, all of us can be captive to the fear of people and trapped by a desire to always please people. Pastor Gary draws on this story from John’s gospel to help us recognize any of that sin in our own lives so that we can instead live to please God and fear Him alone.

0:00.0	All right, we are in John's Gospel. We're chapter 18 today. If you have your Bibles open to that place,
0:06.2	I'm going to start to read at verse 28 down through verse 38. So John's Gospel chapter 18, starting at
0:15.3	verse 28, and I'm going to read down through verse 38. It says this, then they led Jesus from
0:23.5	Caiaphas to the Praetorium, and it was early morning, but they themselves did not go into the
0:30.3	Praetorium lest they should be defiled, but that they might eat the Passover. And Pilate then
0:36.9	went out to them and said,
0:38.2	What accusation do you bring against this man, meaning Jesus?
0:43.1	They answered and said to him, if he were not an evil doer, we would not have delivered him up to you.
0:48.9	And then Pilate said to them, you take him and judge him according to your law.
0:53.2	Therefore, the Jews said to him him it is not lawful for us
0:55.6	to put anyone to death that the saying of jesus might be fulfilled which he spoke signifying by what
1:02.3	death he would die and then pilate entered the pritorium again called jesus and said to him
1:08.7	are you the king of the Jews? And Jesus answered him,
1:12.4	are you speaking for yourself about this, or did others tell you this concerning me?
1:18.1	And Pilate answered, am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered you to me.
1:23.6	What have you done? Jesus answered, my kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this
1:29.9	world, my servants would fight so that I should not be delivered to the Jews. But now my kingdom is not from here.
1:37.2	Pilate therefore said to him, are you a king then? Jesus answered, you say rightly that I am a king.
1:46.7	For this cause I was born and for this cause I have come into the world that I should bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears my voice.
1:54.5	And Pilate said to him, what is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again to the Jews and said to them,
2:02.7	I find no fault in him at all. Let's pause there and pray. Lord, it is good to be in your house today
