Britain's winter of discontent in 1979 was defined by mass industrial action, soaring inflation, freezing temperatures and a chaotic government gasping its last breath.

Sounds familiar, isn't it? Nurses are striking again today.

Next week is train drivers again, airport staff again, civil servants again, half a million workers will walk out on Wednesday. It's the biggest day of coordinated strikes since that miserable winter of 1979. And this time they'll be joined on the picket lines by teachers. 23,000 schools may be forced to close. That will mean inevitable chaos

for millions of parents. We don't forget, are facing the exact same wage squeeze and soaring bills

as the teachers. Now they'll be forced to stay at home, miss work, and heat their homes at

vast expense in some cases. This is the current Education Secretary, Gillian Keegan.

We do need to keep teachers and children in school.

And I will work with, you know, you don't need to strike to get my attention.

I will meet with people. I'll be as constructive as possible.
