Earlier today with Justin and Liz, we had our roundtable edition of the podcast. And lo and behold, just a couple of hours after we finished recording and posted the podcast, Dave Dumbrowski and the Phillies make a big move right before the start of the regular season. And they sign Jesus Blasardo, their star left-handed, starting pitcher, to a five-year, $135 million extension. So this is going to be a short podcast. This is going to be a brief one,

just to kind of give you the quick notes of the extension and just give you my thoughts. And I'm

about to lose my voice. So we'll go as long as the voice holds out here, everybody. But yes,

Philly signed Jesus Lazzardo to a five-year, $135 million contract extension that will take him through the

2013-season.

He was set to become a free agent after this year, so he was in his final year with under the

two years that he had left on his contract after the Phillies traded for him before the start

of last season.

And one of the things folks are asking, is this a team-friendly deal?

Sure seems like one.

It's $27 million a year, average annual value over the next five years after this one.

He will finish the 2026 season under his current contract, and then the extension will kick in starting in

27. And this mirrors pretty closely what Ranger Suarez got from the Boston Red Sox when

he signed with them this offseason. Ranger Suarez also got a five-year deal. His was for

$130 million, so just $5 million less in total value,

and $1 million or less, an average annual value. He's getting $26 million a year from the Red Sox,

the Phillies paying Jesus Lazzardo a million dollars more per year. So this is essentially,
