this week we are on location in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. We are on the

campus of Lancaster Theological Seminary and we are here to talk about Philip Schaff.

We are right outside the Philip Schaff library and this seminary was erected in 1893, which is the same year that Philip Schoff died.

It was the theological seminary of the Reformed Church, and by that meant the German Reformed Church and the library was named for Philip Schof and we'll find out in a moment why

Philip Schof was born in 1819 and he died in 1893.

His life, much like John Williamson, Nevin, spanned the 19th century.

He was born in Switzerland.

He was educated in universities throughout Germany and by Germany's towering figures in

church history and biblical studies and theology.

In 1841 he received his degree from the University of Berlin and he taught there for a couple of years before he received a charge to go to America.

In 1843 he arrived in Merersburg, Pennsylvania to serve at what was then the only seminary serving

the German Reformed Church in America.

As we look at Chauff's career, we can see him as having sort of three roles to play.

The first was his role as a churchman.

Throughout much of his life, he gave his energy and efforts to a hymnal and he was the editor of the

hymnal for the German Reformed Church. He also spent a great deal of time

writing about and talking about the German Reformed Church liturgy.
