Summary

This episode marks a return to our roots, with a focus on deeper analysis of what's most important, and less coverage of the ephemeral events that so often dominate the weekly news cycle. Mike and his fellow political scientist Trey - who's guest-hosting this week for Jay - start with a look at Donald Trump's first 100 days. They consider how '100 days' became such a big deal, what a president's first 100 days can tell us about the rest of his term, what it means to be a successful president (and how much of that is in the president's control), and how likely they think it is that Donald Trump will have a successful presidency. Next is their discussion of the Trump tax plan. Mike outlines the basics of the plan after which Mike and Trey talk about whether the plan would be good for the United States, what it would do the the national debt, and the political realities of enacting tax reform. Good morning. Good afternoon, good evening, wherever you are. And welcome to the politics guys with your host, Jay Carson and Michael Baranowski.

0:17.3

Welcome to the politics guys. I'm Michael Baranowski, a political scientist at Northern Kentucky University.

0:23.5

My co-host this week, as always, is Cleveland Area Attorney and sometime Republican strategist Jay Carson.

0:30.5

Before we get to today's show, Jay and I wanted to let you know about a change in our format and why we're making it.

0:36.7

When we started the politics guys,

0:38.2

we had two main goals. The first was to provide the sort of reasoned and thoughtful, liberal,

0:43.7

conservative debate we felt was sadly lacking in the media. The second was to not blindly

0:49.1

follow the weekly news cycle with all of its scandal, sensationalism, and pseudo-news, but instead to focus

0:55.9

on a few truly important things each week and provide deeper and more thoughtful analysis

1:01.5

of them than we typically saw.

1:03.9

Now, we feel we've done a pretty good job of meeting that first goal, though there have been

1:07.7

a few times where I've gotten sort of worked up on various issues,

1:16.1

especially during the presidential nomination season where Bernie Sanders did occasionally bring out my inner crusader. Now, as for that second goal, not getting sucked into the trivialities of the

1:21.7

news cycle, well, we can do better and we will, starting with this episode.

1:32.8

What this means on a practical level is that instead of spending a few minutes on the biggest four or five stories the last week, which is what we've typically been doing of late,

1:37.7

we'll pick out two or occasionally maybe three things and really try to drill down to talk

1:43.1

about what's behind the headlines,

1:45.1

how the story ties into the fundamental beliefs and worldviews of the people involved,

1:50.1

and what the best available research and evidence can add to our understanding.

1:54.8

Now, we think you'll like this new direction, which isn't actually new,

1:59.0

but really a renewed commitment to our founding values.

2:02.1

We do this show for you, which means that we're always really interested in what you think,
