| 0:04.4 | I mean, it is a great American holiday, but, you know, it fills me with joy and sadness |
| 0:11.9 | at the same time because I really like commemorating what America was and the whole idea of what |
| 0:20.5 | independent stood for and what made America different. |
| 0:24.1 | Because being an American was really different than being a German or being French or being Italian. |
| 0:32.0 | I mean, not that there's anything wrong with living in any of those countries. |
| 0:36.4 | And I, you know, I don't blame people for being patriotic about those countries. |
| 0:40.6 | But being an American was very different because all these other countries throughout the world, |
| 0:46.3 | you know, they all basically, they were ruled by kings and they gradually were able to |
| 0:53.8 | get some of their rights, right, from the crown. |
| 0:56.4 | The crown surrendered some rights to the subjects. |
| 0:59.6 | And so everything basically flowed from the top up. |
| 1:04.1 | But America was a different story. |
| 1:06.2 | I mean, once we declared our independence, and you know, interestingly enough, |
| 1:10.4 | I just read a survey that said only, I think only 75% of the adults who were surveyed new |
| 1:18.9 | from which country America won its independence. |
| 1:22.8 | And I think even a smaller percentage, I think 70% or one third rather didn't know what year |
| 1:31.7 | America won that independence from. You know, I wonder if the people who didn't know the year |
| 1:38.2 | that America won its independence from Great Britain. |
| 1:41.6 | I wonder if they also could name the basketball team from Philadelphia or if they even could make |
| 1:48.1 | the connection. But let me just get back on topic. So when we declared in one independence in |
| 1:54.1 | 1776 or declared it in one of eventually, America, we basically created our government. |
