Today, though, we're going to return to our journalist series in which we talk to different people within the industry about their beginnings and their jobs. So today, I'm delighted to

welcome Peter Dury. Peter, hello. How are you doing, Seth? I'm very well. Okay, so full

disclosure for anyone listening. I did interview Peter about a year and a half ago. About a year

and a half ago. Something like that, yeah. For a print article. So if he develops a sort of a glazed overlooking his eyes,

it's because I'm asking him the same question.

So that's entirely my fault.

And also I should say that we did try and do this two months ago,

but GWR sabotaged our plans and left me on a train for six hours.

By the way, if you work for GWR, I don't know how you sleep at night.

I'll be honest. You're an absolutely disgrace. Peter, so talk me through the sort of the

beginnings of the career. I know you started by sort of aiming towards broad sports journalism.

Yes, I graduated from university and after a month there's an accountant

which was never going to work out I started doing what I think in a much more

modern sense 21 year olds do now just firing off letters yeah and I fired off an

awful lot of letters to an awful lot of local newspapers, local radio stations,

and so on and so forth.

I had a great pile of rejections.

And eventually I got given a chance by a guy who I didn't appreciate it at the time,

but was one of the great legends of Fleet Street sports journalism,

a chap called Reg Hater,
