Summary

Hank Hanegraaff, president of the Christian Research Institute and host of the Bible Answer Man broadcast, reflects on the rage of the organization known as People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). This time over the World Series because baseball pitchers warm up in what is called the “bullpen,” a term most insensitive to cattle. PETA suggests “Arm Barn.” As ridiculous as that may seem, it raises the question of what organizations like PETA are up to in the first place. Ultimately, they seek to elevate animals to the status of human beings—and ascribe to animals the personhood reserved for a child. Some, such as bioethicist Peter Singer, go so far as to elevate chimpanzees above disabled children. Wrongheaded, ridiculous, and utterly horrifying. In reality, humans beings are created in the image of God, which ensures that a Down Syndrome child is afforded the same dignity given to a professor like Singer. While we may eat lamb as our Lord did during Passover celebrations, we must never treat lambs in a way that dishonors their Creator. A primary precept of biblical theology is that animals occupy a special role in the hierarchy of creation. While we must never supplant human exceptionalism for animal equality, we are nonetheless called to the ethical treatment of animals.

I woke up early this morning and got into my car, drove to work, and I heard a piece on PETA,

0:37.7

the people for the ethical treatment of animals. And they are in a rage over the World Series.

0:39.2

Why?

0:46.3

Because the Atlanta Braves and the Houston Astros are playing one another, and they have,

0:52.0

well, they have pictures warming up in what is called the bullpen.

0:59.5

And from their perspective, the bullpen is a term that is insensitive.

1:01.7

It's insensitive to cows.

1:07.6

So they want to change the phrase bullpen to arm barn.

1:19.2

Well, as ridiculous as that may seem, I think it raises the bigger question, and that is, what are organizations like PETA up to in the first place? Well, they want to elevate

1:26.7

animals to the status of human beings.

1:31.3

And some, in fact, like bioethics professor Peter Singer, want to go even further in elevating chimpanzees above the value of newborn children, at least children

1:50.8

that happen to be disabled.

1:54.5

This, of course, is horrifying.

2:00.3

Human beings are created in the Amago Day, in the image of God,

2:06.1

and that ought to ensure that a Down syndrome child is afforded the same dignity

2:13.0

that is afforded to a professor like Peter Singer.

2:18.6

Richard Dawkins,

2:22.7

the noted evolutionist,

2:28.0

he may suggest that human beings

2:31.7

have no more intrinsic value than bananas, but he's dead wrong. Humans are the

2:40.5

apex of God's creation. And there are others who are also dead wrong, not just physicalists, people who think that the physical facts fix all the facts, but the PETA people.
