Welcome back everyone to the Epic Gardening Podcast.

0:15.6

We are back with Bob Bromley.

0:17.2

He's the hops technician at Sierra Nevada Brewing Company up in Chico, California.

0:22.4

We talked yesterday about how to plant hops, just some of the basics to keep in mind even

0:26.9

some trellising options, but with such a long season crop and a long lifespan crop

0:33.2

where you're investing multiple years before you get something decent as far as a hop

1:16.8

dormant and start over so that's a good thing to start with.

1:23.9

Speaking of that though, then are there any pests or diseases that would attack under

1:28.1

the ground and potentially ruin the actual root of it?

1:36.9

The biggest concern with hops is the fungal disease, two of them, powdery mildew and

1:44.4

downy mildew.

1:45.9

And those are found mainly up in the Pacific Northwest where they get a lot of rain,

1:50.5

a lot of moisture in the air, so it's quite a big problem up there.
