Summary

t’s almost June, which means every brand is about to slap a rainbow on their logo and send emails saying "we see you." Meanwhile, they’re quietly funding politicians who back Don't Say Gay bills. But yeah, thanks for the rainbow debit card. Super brave of you.

This week I'm honestly just going off on all the performative activist bs that’s been clogging our feeds for a decade. I'm talking about the black squares that literally buried actual BLM resources, the whole corporate Pride grift, and those pink pussy hats (yeah, sorrynotsorry). I'm also dragging those Notes app apologies written by publicists and the little award show pins that basically became a perpetual red carpet accessory.

Basically, if your activism doesn't actually scare the people in charge, it's just marketing, and you're the product.

I saw a Fortune 500 company post a little pride flag as their profile photo on Instagram.

And, yep, they've donated $400,000 to a pack

0:37.0

that backs candidates specifically who want to classify

0:40.9

drag shows as sex crimes. But yet the company on Insta is like, love is love. Chill everyone,

happy pride. Oh, here's a $90 rainbow tote bag. Go fuck yourself. Welcome to We Saw the Double Guys. I'm Robin. And today we're going to be talking about the thing

0:58.1

that makes me want to throw my phone into the river and then possibly draw myself in it.

1:02.6

And that is performative activism. You know what I'm talking about. The hashtags, the filters,

1:09.1

the blackout squares, the celebrity Instagram stories. And they never

1:13.9

write their own stories typically. It's generally done by a publicist who has to Google what

1:19.4

intersectionality means, you know? It's the little enamel pins that they wear on the red carpet.

1:25.0

And then also, yes, I want to talk about those

1:28.0

goddamn pink pussy hats. So I'll be going over all of that today because none of this is activism.

1:34.4

It's not even in the same zip code as activism. It's basically a participation trophy for giving a

shit. And it is the most effective tool right now that the ruling class has for making sure that

1:47.2

you feel like you're doing something, but you're actually not doing shit. So if your idea of fighting

fascism and what we're seeing all around us is just changing your profile picture, congratulations,
