Mass shootings have shaken communities across the globe.

One in Australia is prompting policy change.

Obviously what happened on Sunday night is absolutely tragic,

and there's a huge appetite to make changes where possible.

Another in the US took the life of a Portuguese scientist.

He's being remembered as a brilliant scientist that still had a lot of work to give.

Today the fallout from both incidents, also a sound that brings back memories for Vietnamese

refugees.

The sounds of the sea, the waves,

many of us would use that to put us into sleep.

But for both people, that was a sound

that they don't want to hear anymore.

have been coping with fear and anger after mass shootings in both countries.

We begin today with news updates on the two stories. In the U.S., authorities say that the deadly shooting at Brown University last weekend and the murder of an MIT professor in Boston are connected.

The suspected gunman in both attacks was found dead late last night. Police identified him as an immigrant from Portugal, Claudio Valenti.

The MIT physicist he killed is also from Portugal, and that is where we start today.
