Summary

Humans must dramatically rein in greenhouse gas emissions in order to slow the planetary warming caused by centuries of fossil fuel combustion. But even if we accomplish that through major reforms to our power supply, food systems, industrial industries and more, we still need to remove huge amounts of carbon already in the atmosphere to stave off the worst impacts of climate disruption. This is no easy task. We need to explore every option – both nature-based solutions and tech solutions. In a two-part series, we look at both categories. So as carbon storage reservoirs, they're unmatched.

So how can we maximize those powerful tools? If you were to take

emissions of California. Can humans use and improve upon the Earth's natural methods of capturing

A new IPCC report out this week further details the gravity of our inaction on climate change,

predicting increasingly dire disruption to natural systems and billions of people around the world.

Many of these climate hazards are here now and are accelerating.

I think people are realizing that the risks are very real, they're upon us, and we're behind in sort of getting out in front of this particular challenge.
