Edward Neep smokes alone in the break room of the Gleason Works, where he's employed

as a machinist.

He takes one last sip of coffee and stubs out his cigarette before he looks to the clock

on the wall.

Here in this empty, cold break room, time might as well be nothing.

Every minute feels like a millisecond, every second and nanosecond.

There's no time to cherish these in-between moments before he's rushed back to the floor

where, somehow, his work day stretches to eternity.

Through the large windows that separate the break room from the manager's office, Neep

catches a man in a dark woolen overcoat, speaking with his foreman.

The man in the overcoat flashes something in his palm to the foreman, but Neep thinks

nothing of it.
