God call us to give what we owe to those in authority

Life Group Discussion:

How does understanding that God establishes authority influence your view of government and leadership? In what ways can this belief strengthen our faith during times of political or social tension?

In what ways might our submission to authority reflect our trust in God’s overall plan? How can a willingness to submit impact our relationships with others and our witness to those around us?

In our daily lives, what are some practical ways we can "give what we owe" to those in authority, like teachers, employers, or government officials? How might showing respect and honoring these responsibilities reflect our values and faith, even if we don’t always agree with them?

There we go.

So let me start by telling you about a time recently

0:07.0

when I outsmarted the government.

0:09.0

So, yeah, a few weeks ago, my wife and I went up

0:13.0

to Boulder, Colorado to watch our Baylor Bears,

0:16.0

last goal, baby.

It's just such a shame our Christian friends up north had to lose, but too bad. But yeah, so a couple weeks ago, we went up to Boulder to go watch them play Colorado, and we were staying in Boulder, flew in on Thursday, which meant we had all day Friday to kind of do whatever we wanted, and we decided that we were gonna drive about an hour and a half north to go to the Rocky Mountain National Park. So we got in the car and we did that and we pull up to the gate and all of a sudden they say, hey, I'm so sorry we can't let you in. And I said, why? And they're like, you actually have to buy a timed entry pass. Like you have to buy this pass that lets you come in from nine to two. So you can come back after 2 p.m. but I can't let you in now because you didn't buy this pass. And I'm like, you don't understand. I'm a paying taxpayer of the United States of America. I'm paying your salary. I'm paying for this whole thing. Like, let me in. And they're like, I'm so sorry. I can't. So we had to go hang out Nesta's Park for a few hours, went to Starbucks, ate a sandwich, then pulled back up to Rocky Mountain National Park at 2 p.m., paid the entry fee, and then they let us in. Now, really the only thing I wanted to go see was this thing called Bear Lake. And it's this beautiful lake that's kind of

within one of the mountains. So once we pulled into Rocky Mountain National Park, we were

1:32.0

driving to where Bear Lake was. We took a left where the directions told us to go. But as we

1:37.7

were driving to Bear Lake, all of a sudden I saw there was this long line of cars. There was a park

1:42.2

ranger, and he was checking people's tickets, which confused me because it was after 2 p.m. But we pulled up, and I'm like, hey, we're looking to go to Bear Lake. He's like, oh, I'm so sorry, I can't let you in. You need a timed entry pass. And I was like, what are you talking about? It's after 2 p.m. He said, well, so many people want to see this that the time to entry goes up till 6.30 p.m.

2:03.3

I'm like, I did not travel thousands of miles just to be shut down by some dumb rule.

2:09.7

Like, this doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. But he said, I'm so sorry, nothing we can do

2:14.0

about it. We've got to make you turn around. So that's what I did. But I noticed that as people

2:21.6

were driving away from Bear Lake, they all had this pink slip on their car. So we pulled up to a stop sign.

2:31.2

And once we got to the stop sign, I go, hold up up I get out of the car and run to the car

2:35.2

behind us and I'm wearing a Baylor shirt and I go hey by chance are you done with your

2:41.0

pink slip and can I use it and they go hey we're Baylor fans so since you're a

2:44.5

Baylor bear here yes take it yeah oh yeah so I took that, put it on our car, turned around, and guess what?

2:56.6

Boom, baby! That's right. That's right. I got smart of the government. I mean, some lame rule

3:03.8

couldn't hold me back. I made it in. Now, I told that story really the same way on

3:10.9

Thursday. We do a run-through in this room every single week, and there's people on staff here that
