The idea in one of my favorite personal finance books of all time, the richest man in Babylon,

is that you pay yourself first.

A part of everything you earn is yours to keep.

Not yours to save for a little while and then use to buy a laptop, but yours to keep forever and ever and ever. And that concept of paying yourself first is probably not new to you.

Maybe it is, but it's the idea that when you are paid, I should say this, when you are

given money from your employer you take a portion of that and you pay yourself

Think about that for a moment if you don't pay yourself you are are not paid. So an employer can give you money because of work

you've done, but you are not paid until you take some of that money and keep it forever.

Forever. Never to touch it again.

Ever.

Until maybe your kids touch it because you're, you know, long gone and it's not part of their inheritance.

But a part of everything you earn is yours to Keep.

And I feel like we get part of it, we think,

oh, I'm going to save some of my money but are we thinking this money is

here for keeps forever and ever and ever when you were a little kid and you did something for keeps

that was a big deal and now when you're older I just want you to do a little bit of that with your money.

It's for keeps.

When you receive income from your employer and you don't keep some of it, for keeps forever, you

just end up paying other people.
