Summary

You’ve probably heard that President Trump and the European Union have reached a big trade deal. This is being widely portrayed as a “win” for Trump and a big humiliation for the EU. But it’s not at all clear what we gain as a country from this deal. Surely the phrase “Trump won” has to mean more than, “Trump gets to claim a personal victory and the media is required to play along,” right? We talked to economist Paul Krugman, who has a great new piece on his Substack casting a lot of much-needed skepticism on the deal. Krugman explains in extensive detail what a sham it is: He argues that Europe’s concessions are fake, that the deal won’t spur a lot more manufacturing in the U.S., and that its burden will fall heavily on MAGA, making it a “scam on his voters.” Krugman also discusses why the media seems incapable of reporting clearly and accurately on the magnitude of Trump’s incompetence and delusions.  Looking for More from the DSR Network? I'm your host, Greg Sargent.

You've probably heard that President Trump and the European Union have reached a big trade deal.

0:37.3

This is being widely portrayed as a win for Trump and a big humiliation for the EU. But we think the claim that

0:39.8

Trump won is just bizarre. First, the details of the deal themselves cast some doubt on this

0:45.9

idea. And second, it's not at all clear what we gain as a country from this deal, particularly

0:51.8

in the long run. Surely the phrase Trump won has to mean more than

0:57.1

Trump gets to claim a victory and the media plays along, right? Well, maybe not, it turns out.

1:05.0

Economist Paul Krugman has a great new piece on his substack casting a lot of skepticism on the deal,

1:10.5

so he invited him on to walk us

1:12.2

through all of it. Paul, thanks for coming on. Thanks for having me on. So the basics of this deal

1:18.9

are that the U.S. is imposing a 15% tariff on most imports from Europe, with some exceptions.

1:24.8

There's some talk about the EU agreeing to buy $750 billion in American

1:29.3

energy spread out over three years and an increase of $600 billion in investment in the U.S.

1:35.9

Paul, to start with, can you walk us through the tariff piece of the deal? What does it amount to

1:40.2

and what does it mean? Well, it means that anybody bringing European goods into the United

1:47.5

States is going to pay a tax equal to 15% of the value. And that in itself doesn't tell you who

1:54.8

pays it, but there's overwhelming evidence that the great bulk of that is going to end up being paid

1:59.8

by U.S. consumers.

2:01.5

Certainly none of it is being paid by the Europeans.

2:04.3

One of the, the way to look at is to say, has Europe reduced the prices of stuff

2:09.5

that sells to the United States?
