Summary

#223. Paul Exner is one of our best friends, and easily the best sailor I've ever sailed with. Paul is Isbjorn's Racing skipper, and is the only person - besides mad dad - who I've trusted to sail Isbjorn offshore without me being aboard. He's been a regular on the podcast, so if you don't know his backstory - how he grew up as a Gringo living in Puerto Rico, went on to coach the racing team at the University of Wisconsin, had his own mapping business, built his Cape George 31 Solstice from a bare hull and eventually sailed it to the caribbean - listen to one of his past episodes on On the Wind. Paul & I talk today about surviving Hurricane Irma and how it's changed the lives of his young family.

On the Wind is presented by Forbes Horton Yachts. And also supported by Broadreach, and Offshore Passage Opportunities.

every hour that ticked by the wind's getting stronger and stronger and I said man how much

0:04.1

stronger can it be and there were times that the wind would blow against the wall or the pressure

0:08.9

fluctuation would go in my ears or the roof would lift and I'd be like oh my god hey gang welcome

back to the show I'm recording this from Toronto where Mia and I are here for 10 days for the

boat show, given a bunch of seminars. Those of you that we've seen so far, thanks for coming out,

and we look forward to seeing the rest of you guys this week. On the Wind is presented by Forbes Horton

Friend of the podcast and host of sailing stories, Lee Cumberland, spoke to Forbes about the

boat buying process and how he can help you find the right one to suit your needs.

So say I want to buy a boat, when is the right time to contact a broker? Should I know the

1:01.8

exact boat I want or have a loan or cash in hand? Well, that's a great question. And some brokers

1:08.7

will say, after you've got the money in your pocket I've found

1:13.8

it's a process for most of my customers they'll call me on a listing and it couldn't be

1:19.3

further from the boat that they end up buying in the end and I think that has to do with

1:24.1

condition of the boats that are out there the the budget. If you have a very, very

1:30.3

specific idea of what you want, you're probably going to be end up more in the new boat category

1:35.8

than you are in the brokerage category because condition can vary so wildly. And at the end

1:41.6

of the day, finding that cream puff is really what you're after.

1:45.7

By the way, Forbes can use his experience to help you buy or sell any boat and help you navigate

1:51.6

the joys and pitfalls of the process.
