Summary

Our gorgeous and deeply moving second reading this week is taken from Paul’s second letter to Timothy. I wonder whether I might invite especially the elders among us to attend carefully to this letter. It is the letter of an old man at the end of his life’s work, passing advice and authority on to his younger colleague. As he often does, Paul makes a comparison to sporting events. There is something at stake in the Christian life, something worth striving for. It is like a great race, in which we strive to win. We are meant to make it to the goal line—and perhaps the last miles will be the hardest.

Come to the end of his life's work and he's passing advice and authority onto

his younger colleague. Now, you know, the Bible, every part of the Bible for

1:11.3

everybody, but I wonder whether I might invite especially the elders listening to

1:16.3

me to attend carefully to this letter. People coming to the end of their earthly

journey. I think especially for you, this will be a powerful message. Paul is as

1:31.5

it were summing up his life and work preparing to let go of this life and

1:36.2

enter into the higher life of heaven. And so he says beautifully, I'm already

1:43.5

being poured out like a libation. Now, it's very striking reference, but I think

1:49.2

we'll largely miss it because it's so alien to our culture. What's he talking

1:53.0

about? A libation. Well, at the end of a Roman meal, remember, Paul's a Roman

1:58.0

citizen. The custom was to pour a cup of wine into the ground or onto the floor as

2:03.3

an offering to the gods. It's like allowing the gods to drink as well, right,
